2020 Wagga Wagga Relay For Life announces exciting new format and date

Wagga Wagga Relay For Life will this year kick off on a Friday night in a bold resurgence plan for the Cancer Council’s major fundraiser. The 2020 Wagga Wagga Relay For Life will commence on the evening of Friday 20 November and conclude 24 hours later. “The Relay For Life voluntary committee is excited about this new concept, which in turn has brought fresh ideas to keep the event popular and relevant,” said Christine Williams, Cancer Council’s Community Relations Coordinator.
“The Friday evening start was born from feedback and a survey of 2019 participants resulted in a majority support for the idea. Not only will it be a fresh start to the Relay, but it enables participants to get their Sunday back.”
For nearly the past two decades, Wagga Wagga has followed Relay For Life tradition and started the 24-hour event on a Saturday morning, Ms Williams said the Relay’s change from its traditional October date to November was a result of COVID-19. “With no specific end to COVID-19, the committee determined to select a later date in 2020 so as to give Relay participants the best chance to form teams, fundraise and join a community event in what we all hope will be a celebration of post COVID-19,” Ms Williams said.
“The crux of Relay For Life is that it is a community event. It celebrates cancer survivorship, remembers loved ones who have died from the insidious disease and empower teams of families, friends and colleagues to raise money to fight back against cancer.” Last year’s Wagga Wagga Relay For Life raised more than $130,000 which assisted in funding Cancer Council’s world class research, prevention programs, advocacy plus information and support services for people affected by cancer.
